Sports, School Spending on Sunny Cinco

Here's what you need to know to start the day May 5.

1. We'll see a lot of sun today, the National Weather Service says, but it's a cold, cruel sun. The temperature will top out at 69 degrees with winds of 5 to 10 mph. There's also a risk of brush fires this afternoon because of low humidity, fire-whipping winds and surprisingly dry ground conditions after all the recent rain. Tonight won't be as cold as last night, with a low of 47.

2. The Cobb County Board of Education went through the budget line by line Wednesday night, and the good news is that nothing has changed since last Thursday: with no tax increase and no layoffs. But Chairwoman Alison Bartlett sees big trouble ahead. East Cobb Patch will have the story this morning.

3. Today is the National Day of Prayer, and it's hard to imagine a day without more to pray about. Pray for the tornado victims. Pray for those who are doing so much to help them. Pray for the Navy SEALs who killed Osama bin Laden. Pray for all of us that al-Qaida doesn't get revenge. (And maybe pray to hit the exacta on the Kentucky Derby this Saturday.) All of that won't stop the protest expected this morning at the Cobb County Prayer Breakfast at the Cobb Galleria Centre. The breakfast starts at 7 a.m. with Shan Cooper of Lockheed Martin as the keynote speaker.
