Showdowns for Baseball, Taxes Today

Here's what you need to know to start July 26 in East Cobb.

1. Expect a standard muggy summer day today, according to the National Weather Service. The high will be about 91, with little wind and a 20 percent chance of rain. The overnight low will be around 71. 

2. The East Marietta National Little League all-stars at the state tournament in Cartersville on Monday night, beating the host team, 11-3. The 3-0 Giants complete pool play today at 5:30 p.m. against the other undefeated team in Pool A, 2-0 Columbus American. A win clinches the top seed in Thursday’s semifinals for East Marietta; a loss makes the No. 2 seed likely. 3. The Cobb County Board of Commissioners will meet at 7 p.m. at 100 Cherokee St. for the third and final , then hold a regular meeting that will include a vote on the property tax rate. As expected, East Cobb’s Bob Ott plans to vote against the increase from 9.6 mills to 11.21 mills; JoAnn Birrell, who represents Northeast Cobb and East Cobb north of Roswell Road, could be the decisive vote.

4. The county commissioners aren’t the only ones voting on a countywide millage rate today. The Cobb Board of Education is holding a special meeting at 1:30 p.m. at the at 514 Glover St. to set the school tax rate. The proposal is to increase the rate from 18.9 mills to 20 mills, then use to buy the rate back down to 18.9 mills. If hold, the measure will pass 4-3, with East Cobb’s Scott Sweeney joining the trio of East Cobb’s David Banks, South Cobb’s David Morgan and West Cobb’s Lynnda Crowder-Eagle on the winning side. This will be first board meeting as superintendent.

5. The East Cobb Business Association holds its monthly After Hours event today from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Red Sky Tapas & Bar, 1255 Johnson Ferry Rd. It’s an informal event designed for networking. No registration is required, and there’s a cash bar. Worst-case scenario, you spend a couple of hours eating excellent tapas and hanging out at one of East Cobb’s best nightspots.
