Please Don't Feed the Bear

Here's what you need to know to start the day June 8.

1. Today will be the 11th consecutive day in the 90s in East Cobb, which perhaps shows why Memorial Day is considered the unofficial start of summer. We'll see a high of 91 on this sunny day and an overnight low of about 67 tonight, the National Weather Service says. And we remain under a Code Orange air-quality alert.

2. Day 2 of the Major League Baseball draft saw some familiar East Cobb names called: grad Mark Pope (fifth round, San Diego Padres) and alums Jon Matthews (eighth round, Cincinnati Reds), Matt Lane (ninth round, Chicago White Sox) and Andrew Jones (18th round, Boston Red Sox). We'll have more on those draftees today while we watch the final 20 rounds of the draft in the hope of seeing more East Cobb picks.

3. The Metro Atlanta Northern Crescent Transit Summit will be held at the Cobb Galleria Centre today from 7 a.m. to noon. Tickets are $40 for members of the Chamber of Commerce in Cobb, north Fulton or Gwinnett and $55 for others. . We'll have coverage of the summit on East Cobb Patch.

4. After a month packed with special meetings, the Cobb County Board of Education is holding its regularly scheduled monthly work session this morning at 8:30 at the Central Office in Marietta. The only action should be approval of the budget, but charter school petitions could raise passions. Here's a full preview.

5. A black bear is making itself at home around Embry Lane in Northeast Cobb. WSB-TV has video of the bear, which Department of Natural Resources officials don't plan to trap; they expect the bear to move on when its food supply runs out. Whether it will head into East Cobb, Kennesaw or the wilds of Cherokee County next, we don't know. But as they always said in the Yogi Bear cartoons, if you do see it, please don't feed the bear.
