Mah Jongg Tournament Returns to Etz Chaim

Contestants will play for cash prizes -- and kibbitz -- at the Jan. 26 event to benefit the East Cobb synagogue preschool.

From Allison Barchitact at the East Cobb synagogue, which once again will be the center of the local Mah Jongg universe right after the first of the year:

The 4th annual Mah Jongg tournament is scheduled for 1pm on Sunday January, 26th 2014.  The tournament features cash prizes for the top three winners. The tournament also includes a prize raffle with gifts valued up to $300. All proceeds of this tournament benefit the Etz Chaim Preschool.

Mah Jongg, while a traditional game of the Far East, has been a cultural tradition among Jewish American Women for generations. Amanda Flaks, chairwoman of the tournament, has been playing for five years. “I love Mah Jongg because it is fun to play and you get to kibbitz (chit-chat) with your friends.”

Participants in the tournament will follow the American Mah Jongg League rules, so Mrs. Flaks encourages everyone to bring their own 2013 cards. The entry fee for participants is $25 and online registration is available at http://www.etzchaim.net/2014-mah-jongg-tournament/.
