Photo Winner; Vegas Unlucky for Walton

Here's what you should know to start Sept. 19 in East Cobb.

1. The weather will stay cool and might turn wet this afternoon, the National Weather Service says. The high will be about 74 with a breeze of 5 to 10 mph, and there’s a 20 percent chance of showers after 2 p.m. The likelihood of rain rises to 60 percent after 8 p.m., and the overnight low will be around 63.

2. National Geographic photographer Peter Essick is the speaker at tonight’s meeting of the Cobb Photographic Society. He’ll talk about photojournalism and shooting photos of landscapes around the world. The at 1395 S. Marietta Pkwy.

4. Congratulations to East Cobb’s Harriette Majoros, who won IrishCentral.com’s Summer Vacation Photo Competition with a poster-quality photo of a white Connemara horse. Majoros, 70, told the Irish-American website that she got only one photo of the horse through a rolled-down car window while she and her husband were on vacation in Ireland. She won a basket of Irish goodies.

5. volleyball team, the defending state AAAAA champion, competed in the 48-team Durango Fall Classic Tournament in Las Vegas over the weekend and finished eighth in the silver bracket, or 16th overall. The Raiders swept pool play Friday, beating Seaquam of Vancouver, British Columbia, 25-13, 25-10 and Wilson of Long Beach, CA, 29-27, 23-25, 29-27. But Walton lost four consecutive games Saturday: 25-23, 17-25, 25-23 to Clovis West (CA) to determine which team advanced to the championship bracket; 15-25, 25-23, 27-25 to Edison of Huntington Beach, CA, to start the silver bracket; 25-20, 25-27, 25-22 to Pleasant Grove (UT) in the second round of that bracket; and 25-23, 25-21 to Notre Dame of Park Hills, KY, in the seventh-place game for that bracket.
