Home for Lunch; Thursday Night Lights

Here's what you need to know to start the day May 24.

1. It will be mostly sunny today with a high of about 89 degrees and a light breeze gusting to 15 mph, the National Weather Service says. Expect a clear night with a low around 64. (OK, it's not identical to Monday; the temperatures are a degree cooler.)

2. Today is the penultimate day of public school for children, and the kids will be out early: high-schoolers at 11:30 a.m.; middle-schoolers at 12:30 p.m.; and the elementary children at 1:30 p.m. High school graduations start Wednesday when Class of 2011 receives diplomas at Kennesaw State University; more on that tomorrow. But if you have photos from Monday's Walton Senior Evening of Inspiration, we'd love to see them. Just click "Add photos & videos" to upload them to this article. And remember that you can post free graduation announcements on East Cobb Patch; just click here and choose "Graduation" for the announcement type.

3. In other school news (if you don't care about the schools in East Cobb, this probably won't be your favorite week at East Cobb Patch), our superintendent-to-be, , stopped by Smyrna on Monday to meet the public and the press. Scott Sweeney, one of East Cobb's Board of Education members, offered a bit of insight into the hiring process. And the talkative, friendly Hinojosa answered more of Patch's questions, including details about his Cobb salary and his Texas pension; we'll have that article today. If you ask nicely, we might even have some video.

4. An East Cobb/Northeast Cobb matter, the unveiling of , is the most interesting matter before the Cobb County Board of Commissioners today. Don't believe us? You can watch the board's work session live on cable Channel 23 or online at 1:30 this afternoon. We recommend following along with our live blog of the regular meeting at 7 p.m. right here at East Cobb Patch, but that also will be televised live for your viewing pleasure. Meanwhile, don't forget that the first county furlough day is this Friday, and county offices also are closed Monday for Memorial Day.

5. How do you feel about Thursday night football in college? What about the pros (assuming the NFL ever settles its labor woes)? Are you ready for Thursday night high school football? It's coming to East Cobb this fall when plays at on Oct. 13, part of a new schedule of televised Thursday night football from WSB-TV and the Georgia High School Association. You can set the DVR for Comcast Channel 248 at 7:30 that night. We can't offer you many details yet of Patch's plans for football coverage this fall, but we'll definitely be there for the Yellow Jackets and Greyhounds.
