Hit the Books, Stay Cool

Here's what you need to know to start the day June 1.

1. The weather today will be hot. Hotter than normal, yes, but, again, they don't call it Hotlanta for nothing. If you don't like the 90s in June, East Cobb probably isn't the place for you. It will be mostly sunny with a high in the mid-90s today, the National Weather Service says. There won't be a lot of humidity, just enough for a heat index of 97 or so. The temperature will drop only to 71 overnight. But at least the air quality should be OK.

2. The kicks off its Summer Reading Program today. It's actually three programs in one: one for children, one for teens and one for adults. Sure, the newly departed Atlanta Thrashers were one of the partners for the children's program, but the show goes on. Stop by the East Marietta or East Cobb branch to sign up and get more details. Or head to the Mountain View Regional Library in Northeast Cobb instead and catch the 11 a.m. preschooler program, "Owney's Travels on the Train," featuring the book Owney the Mail-Pouch Pooch and Kennesaw's Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History. Whichever library you visit, stay for a while to enjoy the air conditioning.

3. Today is the last official day of work for Cobb County teachers, and it also marks another opportunity for teachers and the general public to meet the man in line to be the next superintendent of the , . He'll be at in Northeast Cobb from 4:30 to 6 p.m., then race across the county to Powder Springs for a session at from 6:30 to 8 p.m. If nothing else, Hinojosa will get a taste of rush hour in Cobb County. Board of Education Chairwoman Alison Bartlett joked during a board meeting Tuesday night that the school system is counting on a good travel time to keep that schedule.

4. Speaking of that school board meeting, it was the chance for the public to sound off on the . Apparently, a budget also doesn't arouse much passion in the public because no one appeared to speak during the open forum. Or maybe people simply are picking their fights more carefully. The meeting did raise the issue of fair pay for school nurses, who don't get the same annual step increases as teachers. East Cobb Patch will have that story later today.

5. We're still reeling from the endless assault of tornadoes this spring, but here's something else for you to worry about: Today marks the start of the Atlantic hurricane season. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center expects an above-normal season through Nov. 30. But then it seems that's always the prediction. For now, get to know these names: Arlene, Bret, Cindy, Don, Emily, Franklin, Gert, Harvey, Irene, Jose, Katia, Lee. Those are the first 12 names for tropical storms this year, the National Hurricane Center says. We hope we don't get to hear any others. Seriously, though, Arlene and Irene in the same year? Why not just carry the theme through with Carlene and Erlene and Marlene and so on? Isn't it time to open the voting for hurricane names to the public on the Internet and by text? The money raised from text voting could go into a relief fund for future hurricane victims.
