Heat's Almost Off; What's Unlucky About That?

Here's what you need to know to start the day May 13.

1. We'll have more of the same weather today, with a high around 87 degrees, but things will change after 2 p.m., the National Weather Service says. The wind will kick up with gusts up to 20 mph, and there's a 30 percent chance of storms through the afternoon. That chance rises to 40 percent tonight, when the low will be 62 degrees.

2. The cooler, wetter weather could last through at least Saturday, so you might want to make a point of heading up to Northeast Cobb for the right when it opens at 3 p.m. today. The festival continues through Sunday. I think it was Socrates who first asked: What doesn't taste better mixed with feta cheese, wrapped in phyllo dough and drizzled with olive oil? (The answer, of course, is hemlock.)

3. The Cobb County School District announced good news Thursday: SACS, the regional accrediting agency, won't launch an investigation of the school system for now but will keep a close eye on Cobb to ensure the Board of Education improves the way it operates. Of course, that decision came in a letter (attached to this article) the same day that East Cobb school board member David Banks and Chairwoman Alison Bartlett . The parent of SACS, AdvancED, is holding an 11:30 a.m. news conference in Alpharetta to discuss updates on the Cobb, Atlanta and Clayton County public schools; we should have an article this afternoon.

4. Our friends at Dunwoody Patch are combing through the latest court filings related to November's and of East Cobb. The new documents come from Neuman's wife, Ariella, in their separation case and lay out a details of the alleged affair between Neuman and the wife of the murder victim Rusty Sneiderman. East Cobb Patch will bring you the story today.

5. It's Friday the 13th. Consider yourself warned and armed with a vocabulary word: paraskevidekatriaphobia. That's the fear of Friday the 13th. And here's a little more knowledge: Today is the only Friday the 13th of 2011, but we'll have three of them in 2012. Maybe the Maya were right.
