Going Green in East Cobb -- On Johnson Ferry?

Pedestrian- and bike-friendly components of the Johnson Ferry Road Design were unveiled this week. Could that start a trend?

Earlier this week East Cobb Patch wrote about the details of the Johnson Ferry Road Design that were presented to the public.

The guidelines stemmed from the approval of the Johnson Ferry Urban Design plan in 2011, the result of discussions with citizens groups, business owners and Cobb County government.

Among the long-held desires by many in East Cobb is a more pedestrian- and bike-friendly environment along a traffic-clogged major artery that reflects how the area developed.

As soon as we published the story on Thursday, Bike Cobb commented on our Facebook page that it "would love the [Johnson Ferry] corridor to be in accordance with the county's 2009 Complete Streets Policy, providing accommodation along the entire corridor for all users -- including bicyclists."

And here's the link from the Bike Cobb website with the details.

In addition to providing quality-of-life amenities, the Johnson Ferry Road Design  guidelines (see attached PDF) also could have a more positive effect on the environment, as East Cobbers accustomed to driving short distances might opt to walk or pedal instead.

Corridor enhancement supporters also hope the improvements will spark similar measures in car-crazed East Cobb.

Do you think the Johnson Ferry Road Design -- which admittedly may take years to complete -- can help make East Cobb more green-friendly? Tell us in the comments.
