Easter and Earth Day Events Abound in East Cobb

A few ideas for weekend activities and events -- and not too far from home.

Holy Week services are already underway, with more scheduled for Good Friday to lead off a busy weekend of activities in East Cobb. 

On Friday night the East Cobb United Methodist Church will feature the lauded "Requiem" of composer and professor Bradley Ellingboe, whose work has been played in churches, concert halls and other venues during the Easter season.

The Good Friday service, which lasts from 7-10 p.m., is being presented by the East Cobb UMC Chancel Choir and Guest Orchestra.

The church is located at 2325 Roswell Road, just west of East Piedmont Road.

2. Easter Egg Hunts Are Everywhere

A number of East Cobb churches are having Easter Egg Hunts on Saturday. Here are a few to choose from: 

-- 9-10:30 a.m., Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church, 4385 Lower Roswell Road

-- 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Mountain View United Methodist Church, 2300 Jamerson Road

10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Eastside Baptist Church, 2450 Lower Roswell Road

10 am. to 3 p.m., East Cobb Church of Christ, 4250 Roswell Road

And if you'd like a large, community-style hunt for your kids, there's also the Northeast Cobb Community Egg Drop from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Sprayberry High School, 2525 Sandy Plains Road.

They're talking about 40,000 eggs decorated and for plucking into Easter baskets. Hunt times are separated by grade level. Eggs will be hunted and others will be dropped from helicopters.

Gather around the track at the football field for all the fun.

3. Walton High Shredding Event 

Get rid of old papers from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and help out the at Walton High School, 1590 Bill Murdock Road.

Small fees will apply for various box and trash bag sizes. The event takes place in the main parking lot.

4. Giving Grill at Harry's Farmers Market

Another environmental event should attract your appetite as well. 

The "Giving Grill for Keep Cobb Beautiful" takes place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Harry's Farmer's Market, 70 Powers Ferry Road.

Hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, drinks and more are available from 50 cents to $5 with all proceeds going to Keep Cobb Beautiful.

5. Good Mews Annual Spring Flea Market

East Cobb's dedicated cat shelter continues its flea market sale to benefit its efforts to rescue unwanted cats and prepare them for adoption.

Furniture, home decor and other household items will be on sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Easter Sunday. 

The flea market will be held at the East Lake Shopping Center, 2145 Lower Roswell Road, Suite 40, near the Wild Wing Cafe and Aldi Foods. 

A final sale date is scheduled for next weekend. 

There also will be another sale next Saturday, April 30.
