East Cobb Schools Honor Veterans

Events at Shallowford Falls, Hightower Trail and Faith Lutheran are among local observances on Friday.

Fifth-grade students at Shallowford Falls Elementary School in East Cobb will present that school’s Thirteenth Annual Veteran’s Day Concert on Friday. Two performances are scheduled for 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. Patriotic music, dance numbers, and a moving tribute to American armed forces members past and present are planned. A reception will follow each performance. Approximately 125 students along with several professional guest musicians will join together to honor veterans in the community.  is calling its Veterans Day program "Who Paid the Price?" The event begins at 9:25 a.m. Friday after a brief breakfast reception for veterans and active duty soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines.  

Highlighting the program will be the removal of 13 desks, representing the original thirteen colonies, from social studies classrooms in grades six through eight. Students will enter their classrooms on Friday morning to find desks missing. Teachers will then lead students to the auditorium, where they will be reminded of the role American veterans play in preserving the opportunities we have today.

Following the program, the veterans will each pass a desk to one student from each class, who will then pass it to another. The experience will be a visual reminder from these honored servicemen that the responsibility for preserving freedom must be passed on from one generation to another.

The students of  will present a Veterans Day celebration, “Thanking Those Who’ve Served,” at 10:30 a.m. Friday. The program will consist of musical tributes set to photographs of American servicemen and scenes of America, scripted to a patriotic narrative honoring our nation’s servicemen. This event is being held in partnership with Operation Stars and Stripes, who will be collecting items at the program for distribution to our deployed service members during the Holiday season. The program is free and open to the public. Faith Lutheran Church and School is located at 2111 Lower Roswell Road.

The City of Marietta and the Marietta Kiwanis Club are hosting a Veterans Day parade happening on Friday beginning at 11 a.m. at the  and marching through the Marietta Square followed by a ceremony at noon at Glover Park. Participants will include the marching bands, including , and and  high schools will be among the JRROTC units present. Ceremonies on the wquare will start at noon and end around 1.
