Dine Out for Students, Run for Office

Here's what you need to know to start Aug. 16 in East Cobb

1. The temperature is creeping back toward the 90s but won’t get there today, the National Weather Service says. It should be sunny with a high of about 88 and a gentle breeze today. Overnight, the low will drop all the way to 61.

2. Now that school is back in session, getting dinner on the table can be tough some nights. Through Thursday, you don’t have to feel guilty about eating out if you choose one of the restaurants partnering with Communities in Schools of Marietta/Cobb County. Those restaurants will donate a portion of their proceeds to support CIS programs that help youths succeed in school. 3. The Cobb County Board of Commissioners is meeting at 9 this morning at 100 Cherokee St. off Marietta Square for its monthly zoning hearing. One of the issues on the agenda involves changes to Walton Communities’ plans for the development of the northwest corner of Cobb Parkway at Cumberland Boulevard.

4. Qualifying for the Sept. 20 special election to fill the 43rd District seat of the late Rep. (R-Northeast Cobb) opened Monday and continues until noon Wednesday. Three candidates, former state Sen. Robert Lamutt, former Cobb Republican Chairman Don Hill and Dr. Geraldine Wade, filed Monday, the Marietta Daily Journal reports. The deadline to register to vote in the election is next Monday, the Cobb Board of Elections & Registration says. Check the attached map to see what the 43rd District covers.

5. Wonder whatever happened to 2010 grad Brandon Burrows, a defensive star as a junior for the Raiders’ 2008 regional championship team who missed his senior season with a knee injury? He redshirted as a freshman at Georgia last year and will have to sit out this season after having shoulder surgery, the Marietta Daily Journal reports.
