5. May 18 plays a prominent role in the course of Georgia history for a couple of reasons, according to History.com. First, it was this day in 1860 that the Republican Party nominated Abraham Lincoln for president, leading to his election in November, Georgia's secession, the Civil War, Sherman's March to the Sea, etc., all the way to this date in 1896, when the Supreme Court issued its infamous ruling in the case of Plessy vs. Ferguson. That decision supported legal segregation across the South for the next six decades.
