Can You Resist a Book Sale?

Your weekend guide to entertainment and cultural options in and near East Cobb.

Don't have room for any more books in the house? Don't have time to read the growing pile on your nightstand? 

This weekend's Friends of the Cobb Library Book Sale might prove to be too tempting to resist. 

That's because the semi-annual sale, which runs from Friday through Sunday at Jim Miller Park, has most items on sale from 25 cents to $1, including hardbacks, magazines and audio and video cassettes.

There also will be a silent auction for collectibles, with bidding closing at 4 p.m. Saturday. Proceeds from the sale will be used for the library system to purchase new books, CDs and DVDs. 

When: Hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

The final performances of  take place at the Earl Smith Strand Theatre this weekend. 

This Atlanta Lyric Opera production of the hit Broadway musical revue celebrates the life and times of Ellie Greenwich, whose doo wop sounds skyrocketed to the top of the sixties charts. Among the numbers that have her in the Songwriters Hall of Fame: "Chapel of Love," "Da Do Ron Ron," "Be My Baby," "Hanky Panky," Do Wah Diddy," "And Then He Kissed Me," "River Deep. Mountain High" and "Leader of the Pack."

Tickets range from $27 to $48.

Temple Kol Emeth's Lights of TKE Avodah Evening of Honor on Saturday will recognize three members for service to the East Cobb synagogue and the community. 

Ellen and Paul Lopez and Cynthia Bowman will be recognized for their contributions to Tikkun Olam, a Hebrew phrase that means "repairing the world." The event includes dinner with beer and wine, entertainment, dancing and a silent auction. 

Ticket prices range from $100 to $1,000. 

When: 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday.

Where: The Pavillon East Cobb, 736 Johnson Ferry Road.

East Cobb's Congregration Etz Chaim will present the evening on Saturday.

The program, which features students from the synagogue's preschool, has a retrospective theme from the 1940s to the 1990s. There's a full dinner, dancing and a silent auction. Dress in the style of your favorite decade and dance the night away!

Tickets are $50 per couple in advance and $60 at the door. Single tickets are available upon request. 

When: 7:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday.
