Baseball, Swimming and More Rain

Here's what you need to know to start the day July 6.

1. Stop me if you’ve heard this before: Expect a partly sunny day with a high near 90 today, giving way to a 60 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms between 2 and 8 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. The overnight low will be around 69.

2. The East Marietta National Little League’s 11- and 12-year-old all-stars couldn’t have asked for a better start to the District 2 tournament Tuesday night at Sewell Park, rolling to a 24-6, four-inning win over Murphey Candler Blue on Tuesday night. East Marietta scored 12 runs in the top of the first and added seven more in the second to grab a 19-0 lead and cruise to the win. East Marietta outhit Murphey Candler, 21-3, according to the online box score, and got home runs from Noah Cole, Jordan Phillips and Jason Avers. Avers’ first-inning blast was a grand slam.

3. The two Little League tournaments continue at Sewell Park today. In the District 2 tournament for all-stars up to age 12, Milford (1-0) plays Smyrna (0-0) at 6 p.m., and the two Murphey Candler teams (both 0-1) play at 8, both on Field 3. In the 9-year-old Northwest Georgia tournament on Field 1, East Marietta (0-0) plays Cartersville (0-1) at 6, and Murphey Candler Blue (1-0) plays Rockmart (1-0) at 8.

4. Fresh off its to the county Board of Commissioners last week, the Cobb County Citizens Oversight Committee gets back to work with a public meeting this morning at 9 at 100 Cherokee St. in Marietta. The PDF file of the committee’s presentation is attached. And if that doesn’t quench your thirst for government meetings, the county Construction Board of Adjustments and Appeals meets at 6:30 p.m. at 100 Cherokee St.

5. The McCleskey-East Cobb Family YMCA is doing its part to prevent drownings this summer by taking swimming lessons to East Cobb apartment complexes for people who can’t afford them, The Marietta Daily Journal reports. YMCA volunteers are at the Las Colinas apartments on Franklin Road this week.
