Banks' Calendar; Raider's Early Offer

Here's what you need to know to start the day June 17.

1. We've spent most of this week hovering around the 90-degree mark for a high, and today looks the same. The high on this partly sunny day probably will fall just short of 90, the National Weather Service says, and the overnight low will be about 68. There's a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms between 2 p.m. and 2 a.m.

2. Today is the second of the Cobb County government enacted to . You'll still get help if you call 911, for example, but you can't handle such routine business as renewing your vehicle registration. The next furlough day is July 1.

3. The Cobb County School District has posted the calendar East Cobb school board member David Banks is proposing at next Thursday's Board of Education meeting. As discussed at a , the calendar would start the school year Aug. 8, would end the first semester before Christmas and would finish the year before Memorial Day, with weeklong breaks in September, November, February and April. Banks' plan also would add 10 minutes to the school day. You can check out the proposed calendar to the right.

4. Parker McLeod didn't start at quarterback for last fall as a sophomore, and he has two more years as a Raider before heading off to college in 2013. But he already has a scholarship offer from a university in a Bowl Championship Series conference. McLeod went to Kentucky last weekend for camps at the universities of Louisville and Kentucky, and Card Games reports that Big East member Louisville offered McLeod on the spot, his first offer. Scout.com has a video with McLeod talking about his visit to Louisville. Remember that two of McLeod's defensive teammates, the Blaylock twins, in 2012.

5. Friday is the day when East Cobb Patch turns its focus to sports, including a youth sports roundup later today. Among the news items this week: The East Marietta National Little League named its 11- and 12-year-old all-star team this week, and the District 2 tournament for 9- and 10-year-olds starts Saturday at Murphey Candler Park in Brookhaven.
