Bad Storms, Hail Rip Through East Cobb

Heavy rain, winds, hail knock out power in area; possible tornado activity unconfirmed.

An intense and powerful storm system pushed through East Cobb Friday night, knocking out electric power to portions of the area and dumping heavy rain and damaging hail. 

A tornado warning was issued until around 8:30 p.m., as the storm rolled through metro Atlanta quickly. A second severe thunderstorm warning in Cobb expired at 9:30 p.m., but the area remained on alert. 

Cobb and most of north and central Georgia remained under a tornado watch until 6 a.m. Saturday, as more storms moved into the state from Alabama.

In East Cobb there have been scattered reports of golfball-size hail, along with wind damage, but no official confirmation of any tornado touching down. 

Power was reported out along a stretch of Lower Roswell Road from the South Marietta Parkway to Sedalia Park Elementary School. Electricity was reported on along Old Sewell Road, but the road was scattered with debris.

According to a Tweet from Georgia Power around 9:40 p.m., electricity was out for 13,000 customers in metro Atlanta and 25,600 across Georgia. 

The National Weather Service is predicting more thunderstorms moving through the Atlanta area before mid-afternoon Saturday. Temperatures are expected to reach into the upper 60s, with winds between 20 and 25 mph.
