Are You Ready for Some Football?

Here's what you need to know to start the day May 20.

1. Boring, beautiful, short-sleeve spring weather is back in time for what should be a wonderful weekend. On this mostly sunny day, the high will be about 87 degrees, the National Weather Service says, and the overnight low should be about 60. The only downside today is that we're under a Code Orange alert for air quality.

2. Spring weather means spring football, especially now that our high school baseball teams are done for the year, and the spring games are today. plays at 7 tonight, then holds the Spring Jamboree for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade players all day Saturday with teams from , and . Spring Extravaganza starts with the junior teams at 6 p.m.; the varsity Blue vs. White Game is at 7:30. You can watch that game online if you can't make it to Raider Valley or don't have the $5 for a ticket. The festivities for Blue & White Game begin with Dinner on the Green at 5:30 p.m. The junior teams start scrimmaging at 6, with a tribute to seniors and alumni at 7:30 and the kickoff of the varsity game at 7:45. Return to East Cobb Patch over the weekend for photos from the games.

3. Today is the deadline to participate in the Atlanta Regional Roundtable's transportation survey to help create the final list of projects for next year's referendum on a regional 1-cent transportation SPLOST. If you're willing to contribute five minutes of time, you can make your voice heard by clicking here.

4. You've probably heard by now that the Cobb County Board of Education named its sole finalist Thursday night to succeed Fred Sanderson as superintendent of the Cobb schools. You can read about that pick, Dallas, TX, Superintendent Michael Hinojosa, on East Cobb Patch here and here, and we'll have more about the man who would be the Cobb system's first Hispanic superintendent later today. The Dallas Morning News reports that Cobb County made the initial contact with Hinojosa two weeks ago, so after a lengthy search, the endgame moved quickly. We're now in a mandatory, 14-day public-comment period on the choice, with the school board likely to finalize the hiring at its monthly work session June 8 at 8:30 a.m. So let East Cobb board members David Banks and Scott Sweeney know what you think.

5. Of course, none of the above really matters if online minister Harold Camping is right about Saturday being Judgment Day. (A contributor to Dacula Patch takes apart , and a friend from North Carolina shares his thoughts on being left behind.) Is our judgment set in stone if we're just hoping any divine action comes after Animal Kingdom goes for the second jewel in Thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico in Baltimore?
