The Tassel is Worth the Hassle (High School)

Get the most out of your freshman year

and the three years after that

Get there. Come to school every day. You will be able to keep up with your class work and ask questions when you don’t understand.

Get involved. It’s important to feel like you belong to your school. Join a club, play a sport, participate in the band or theater. There are so many options in high school.

Get organized. Use your student planner as an assignment book and organizer. Write everything down – assignments, test dates, deadlines, and due dates for projects. Refer to it daily.

Get started. Do homework from day one. Keep up with assignments and ask for help as soon as you have questions. Be sure and request make-up work when you are absent and complete it in a timely manner.

Get settled. Try to study in the same place and at the same time every day. Pick a place that’s free from distractions. Read over class notes each day even if you don’t have homework in that subject. Daily review strengthens your ability to remember important information.

Get connected. Find good study partners or create a study group for subjects that are more difficult for you. Exchange phone numbers with these students so you can call each other when you need help. Have teachers email addresses/websites handy for at-home assistance if you need it.

Get ahead. Your high school transcript starts from the first day you enter 9th grade. Freshman grades count just as much in your GPA as your senior grades. You can’t wait until your junior/senior year to start worrying about graduation. Make each day a good one.

Get positive. Choose to have a positive attitude every day. Try to avoid the gossip and the drama. You’ll be a much happier person without all of that. Make each day a good one.

Get going. The next four years will fly by. Take advantage of every opportunity to learn. Push yourself to achieve, and step out of your comfort zone from time to time. Invest in your future success by always giving your very best.
