Taste of East Cobb Award Winners

Food festival attendees rated Seed, Red Sky and Keegan's among their favorites. What were yours.

Attendees at the Taste of East Cobb food festival on May 5 have voted with their palates -- and their stomachs -- for their favorite fare. And they are:  Best Taste: Seed Kitchen & Bar Best Dessert: Keegan's Public House Best Value: Seed Kitchen & Bar Friendliest Service: Baked Most Likely to Visit: Red Sky Tapas Highest Sales: Georgia Rib Company While Red Sky and Georgia Rib Company are familiar to East Cobb diners, and Seed opened last fall to wide public acclaim, the honor for Keegan's is worth noting.  The proprietors of an Irish pub by the same name in Kennesaw opened their East Cobb location last month in the former Shaughnessy's Pub space in Shallowford Corners.  Their winning dessert was the Krispy Kreme Bread Pudding, which we …

Readers' Choice: Yogli Mogli

There was good competition in voting for the best frozen yogurt spot in East Cobb, but the winner was clear.

Where to go in East Cobb for frozen yogurt? Readers had plenty of choices in this week's Readers' Choice poll, and they all got some votes.  But the winner was clear: Yogli Mogli.  The Market Plaza shop lapped the field with 10 votes, but its closest rivals got some votes from readers as well, including TCBY, Pinkberry and Menchies.  Thanks to all who voted, and no matter where you get your frozen yogurt, by all means, do enjoy!

2 East Cobb Restaurants Closing

The Empress of China II will serve its last meals on Monday; Botekim Brazilian Bistro has already shuttered its doors.

Two East Cobb restaurants -- one a longtime part of the local dining scene and the other considered a new, rising star -- have closed or will be closing.  The Empress of China II, located in the Market Plaza Shopping Center at 1255 Johnson Ferry Road, is closing on Monday after 32 years in East Cobb.  A notice on the restaurant's website said the closing was due to "the current financial climate" and the retirement of the owners.  The food blog Atlanta Eater reported on Wednesday that Botekim Brazilian Bistro has closed its doors, leaving a note in the door thanking patrons and informing them of the news.  The brainchild of former Sal Grosso chef and Brazilian immigrant Alex DeGrossi, Botekim opened last July to rave reviews (East Cobb …

Moving in at Merchant's Walk

A few new shops have opened, or will soon, but only two spots are left. What would you like to see go there?

Nearly a year after its latest renaissance, Merchant's Walk Shopping Center is just about filled up.  The opening of Whole Foods last July brought with it the arrival of a number retail outlets, service shops and restaurants that continues today.  After the first wave of openings last summer, the opening of Seed Kitchen & Bar continued the revival into the winter and this spring. In March, the Rhinoceros boutique opened after relocating to East Cobb from the Shops Around Lenox.  Both are located in the Whole Foods building of the Merchant's Walk center. Developed and managed by the retail firm EDENS, the complex includes seven free-standing buildings and more than 361,000 square feet of commercial space.  Coming soon is the NUVO Salon, …

Small Business Q&A: Lakeside Chiropractic Wellness Center

This Northeast Cobb clinic aims to show chiropractic care can remedy more than just a pain in the neck.

Headaches, tingling and numbness in the extremities, organ dysfunctions, runny noses, and ear aches may be traced to specific nerves that are in line with specific vertebrae. Chiropractor Dale E. Callaway is able to share, in layman's language, a thorough knowledge of the human body. An initial health consultation is free at the Lakeside Chiropractic Wellness Center, located on Palladian Village Drive in Northeast Cobb.  Callaway, owner and founder of the center, has a degree in business administration and is a certified chiropractic extremity practitioner and certified in other therapy techniques. "Pain is not normal," Callaway says. "I like the example of going to the dentist. Do you wait until your tooth cavity is unbearable to visit a …

Frozen yogurt has become so widely popular that so many shops serve it. Readers Choose Tellus for Nearby Getaway

The Cartersville science museum is your pick for a family-friendly place to spend time on a staycation.

It appears that to get away without really going away, you go to Cartersville. In this week’s regional Readers’ Choice survey of staycation destinations, three of the top four vote-getters are Cartersville sites: Tellus Science Museum, Pine Mountain Recreation Area and Booth Western Art Museum. And even though six of the 19 poll options are in Cartersville Patch, commenters complained about a couple of the Cartersville sites we left off the list. So it’s only fitting that this week’s Readers’ Choice for favorite staycation destination is in Cartersville: the Tellus museum. Sweetwater Creek State Park in Douglasville Patch actually received the most votes, getting 27 percent. But we give equal weight to reviews and ratings of the directory …

Cagle Makes TSPLOST Tour Stop

Supporters of the 10-year, regional sales tax met in Alpharetta to raise funds to educate voters on the proposal.

Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and Metro Atlanta Chamber President Sam Williams were two supporters of the transportation sales tax referendum who made their way to Alpharetta earlier this week to lobby for its passage. The Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce hosted a fundraiser at its offices to answer questions about the transportation referendum, which will go before voters on July 31. They also were ready to collect checks on behalf of the Citizens for Transportation Mobility to continue what they call an education process. Andy Macke, who heads the local chamber's push to get the transporation referendum passed, touted the predicted four-to-one return on investment the estimated $8 billion collected over 10 years will bring. He reminded …

Our representatives are COWARDS. Transportation improvements are essential for the life of the Atlanta region but our representatives wouldn't pass a tax if their life depended on it. Their faith based economic decision (faith in Voo-Doo economics) not to do their job is strangling us. They decided to be clever and gutless and not vote on a tax but kick the problem down the road and let the …   more ›

Zoë's Kitchen to Open in East Cobb

The Meditteranean style-restaurant chain begins serving near The Avenue on Thursday.

East Cobb's newest restaurant is giving away free meals to celebrate its opening this week.  Zoës Kitchen is slated to open on Thursday at 4400 Roswell Road, located in the same shopping center as L.A. Fitness and across from The Avenue. The Birmingham-based chain, which features a Mediterranean-style menu, is planning several other openings in the metro Atlanta area, including near Cumberland Mall in November, according to The Atlanta Business Chronicle.  Zoës is giving away more than 2,000 meals across the metro area on its Facebook page to promote its four metro Atlanta openings. On its Twitter account Monday, it indicated 500 meal giveaways would be for patrons at its East Cobb location.  The company describes its fare as "…
