There are many things that a parent can do to aid their children in holding on to their knowledgeRead More over the summer. The most obvious is to use what you know, and then to even push to the next level.
Steve Kleinrichert June 18, 2013 at 05:15 pm
One of the best things a parent can do is to engage the child in brain - using activities. ForRead More math, have the kids help with a budget, maybe even earn some money and track spending (lemonade stands are great), go to the grocery store with Mom or Dad, and help plan out a summer time trip, looking at maps and mileage. Playing board games also help to build in a natural way to keep math at the forefront, and lessen the damper of the summer slide. Visit the library and do some summertime reading, write a paragraph or two each night and read it at the dinner table to share their reading experience. Visit a museum, go to cultural events, and even just listen to a variety of types of music all aid in keeping the mind nimble and preventing the summer loss.

Yes. Thank you to all of the investors who are buying in my neighborhood and then renting theirRead More properties. To low class renters. Thank you so much. It makes for good neighbors and rising values - NOT!

I may be one of those people you are disparaging. I buy foreclosures and a few short sales, makeRead More repairs and rent them. You may not like your neighbors, however, in many cases, they are the same people that lost houses. It's a much better situation than having neighborhoods scattered with empty, boarded up homes.

Most mentally ill folks "self-medicate" by abusing alcohol and/or drugs. Therein lies theRead More problem. People need access to competent mental health professionals.

Charles dont use this forum to cry about your addictions. This is a serious issue, not your mirror.Read More Face those demons like a man. We are discussing why the government is making our people suffer needlessly. You may not understand this as you blame pot for your alcohol, and crack addictions. There are loads of Vets, elderly, disabled, sick, and injured that can benefit from this natural medicine. Instead it is used as a way to keep the black man down, and fill prisons for cash. Its a dirty, racist game these states play, and it costs us tax payers big! Do you pay taxes Chuck? If you do pay close attention. 50 billion dollars will be spent in the "War on Drugs" this year. That's your debt to repay to the tune of 15 trillion dollars in debt. That number is forecasting to double within the next three years. Marijuana is the largest cash crop in the world. With hemp plants growing as we speak this plant will save our corrupt, immoral, puss filled country from a catastrophic collapse.

If a professional athlete takes banned substances, the ban should be 2 years. Not a puny 100 gameRead More suspension. 100 Games is not a serious deterrent, though MLB has never been very serious in deterring PEDs. A professional athlete should have to be present for out of competition test and even participate in a biological passport program to determine what is normal for that athlete. 100 Games... 2/3 of a season? Wimps.
Jon Gargis (Editor) June 11, 2013 at 05:59 pm
It's hard to disagree with you, Christopher, although I do wonder why MLB suspends players forRead More future games in a world where other sports will invalidate your accomplishments if you're found to have been ineligible to play. Reggie Bush had to give up his Heisman, and that's without PEDs; Lance Armstrong lost his Tour de France titles even though he always tested clean (though he did admit to doping years later). And yet the MLB won't consider striking these players' stats even if there's enough evidence to suspend them for future games. If the MLB was serious about cleaning up the game, they'd take away teams' wins when a player is found to be using, and strike that players' records in any and all games he took part in while he was using. And if you think about it, if players (and by extension, their teams) cheat by using PEDs, they're potentially taking away revenue from teams on the up-and-up (when these clean teams don't make the postseason). Cities with franchises (as well as state governments) should be putting pressure on the league to get tough on PED use and hit teams hard when they profit from players cheating to win.
Christopher Straub June 11, 2013 at 09:30 pm
Interesting thought. Extending culpability to the teams would give them 'buy in'. Create peerRead More pressure to play clean. Presently they stand to benefit from a decrease in their payroll when a player is suspended. There is no penalty aside from the loss of talent, so penalizing statistics is an interesting idea. (Especially if the MLB player's Union doesn't 'throw' these guys 'to the wolves'.) I'm curious in regard to USADA's role, or the possibility of a role in creating a PED free professional sports environment. Akin to WADI in Europe. An independent entity which would be employed to reign in PED use. The saddest part of all of this is when an athlete has a stellar day - and immediately becomes a suspect for drug use rather than hard work and determination.

The post says only that the congressman agreed to meet with his constituent, not the agreed time forRead More a meeting. (Put emphasis on the word "agreed".) I sure hope that my congressman is working hard while in district and has various meetings with many groups making it hard to meet with folks on a moments notice, that may include the next day. That said, its probably important that he meet with gun grabbers just to understand their viewpoint. If he skipped on a meeting, then shame on him, but grab our guns? I hope Price's mind is settled on that one - a resounding "NO" of course. Want positive change? Replace any mayor who is a member of Bloomberg's gun grabbing Mayor's group including Jere Wood, and replace Price if he votes in favor of the ridiculous first step to gun confiscation.

Rich ... concerning unpaid hours ...unfortunately for the teachers they are only paid for classRead More hours ...but if they did a better job at prioritizing while at work maybe they wouldn't have to do "homework". And it's not that I pick on the teachers because it's easier ...they just make themselves such obvious and delicious targets when in one breath they say ..."what about the kids?" and in the next breath they say "we want more money ...and not only that but we want you to pay more taxes so we can get more money!" As a side note ...and I think you know this ...I don't pull the pin, or trigger, on someone unless (s)he really goes out of her/his way to call me out for a duel ... but when they do ...I let em have it ...right dead center mass with a good dose of reality. I know the teachers aren't getting rich ...but they're not in the poor house either and anyone who tries to cast the teachers as helpless people is in my opinion either stupid, crazy, or simply doesn't know what they're talking about because the teacher's union is quite strong and sure stays outspoken on many issues ... many having nothing to do with education.

Frankly, I don't believe anyone NEEDS or has the RIGHT to expect a Bible or any religious book at aRead More state park. I go to enjoy the outdoors. Anyone who wants to bring their own religious text is free to do so. It is not right for the state parks to give the impression that they are in favor of certain religions and beliefs and not others.

Stephen: Just because a text explicitly states something does that mean there is only one meaningRead More and interpretation of that verse or biblical text? For example the one you quoted have many different interpretations and meanings, most of which do not even indirectly relate to homosexuality. On another note...you seem to be a student of the Bible and ancient texts, as well as someone who is versed in many subjects. We have small group discussions on some of these topics, sometimes at my home, other friends' homes, and sometimes at coffee shops or other public places. And I often seek out those whose opinions or understandings may be different than mine to participate--not to debate whose opinion is right (though certainly some of that takes place) but to learn from each other and try to find some commonalities. If you think you might like to participate sometime feel free to contact me directly at pilgrim1@mindspring.com (and this goes for other bloggers too).

Yes, I think they should have the choice of wearing a helmet when pitching. I think it would makeRead More the game better. As with all other protections they have that make them play better because their not worried so much about certain injuries. For example, it's like a guy wearing a cup. Not so much worry and thought about that area because they know it is protected. I think we should take advantage of our advanced era. We have it, use it to our advantage and for our safety like we do everything else that has advanced.

So let's just ban the game all together as well as any other sport or activity that couldRead More potentially cause injury or accident! Good grief what a ridiculous thing to require and regulate more and more of our lives! If a player choses to do so let them but players of sports are more than aware of potential injury and assume that risk when they choose to participate. The business of sports has become way out of hand across the board. When you watch a game on tv and they are measuring the speed of the ball and it is faster than the speed limit on the expressway it's too fast! Getting the ball to the batter so they can hit it should be the goal does it really need to be thrown at the speed of sound? NO! This would greatly decrease the chance of injury by not making such a big deal about the speed of the ball. Kid's would be a lot better off if they could just play a friendly game of baseball They can't anymore because the adults in their life are grooming them to be pro and always win. Let's face it there can only be so many pro's and not all who want to play are going to produce a win every time if ever. Teach them to be kind to other players, and do their best whether they win or not. Let's get back to the basics and let sports be about fun and not business.

That it took the Cobb County Board of Commissioners this long to properly pay police officers isRead More more a governance problem than a funding problem. Our county Government wastes enough money to hire an extra 100 police officers and/or firefighters. We've gone way beyond the concept of the Government providing essential services. IF our political "leaders" would hold the line on taxes and spending, we could attract the kind of businesses that would boost our tax base AND employment. The answer to our problems is NOT higher taxes but LOWER taxes.

Jeff A. Taylor April 26, 2013 at 05:02 pm
Mike, this is not complicated. Republicans favor the redevelopment side of massiveRead More "transportation" spending as it flows to the construction and real estate lobbies. Democrats do so because the re-development usually locks in high-density land-use plans, creates fat, union jobs in the process, and builds large spending projects that must forever be fed with -- more spending. As such T-SPLOST was a perfect, if cynical, bi-partisan creation. Routing billions of dollars to favored lobbies of both left and right would be spun as needed "relief" for traffic congestion. Except they overreached, as insular insiders sometimes do, and made it much too obvious that spending a fortune on rail transit redevelopment schemes had absolutely nothing to do with improving mobility in the ATL metro area. Properly understood then, there was never a Plan A "to fix our transportation problems." And so long as the same forces are in power, there will never be a Plan B either. Or Plan C, D, Q, or Z. There WILL be another scheme to shake more money from the pockets of local taxpayers by calling it something else. Should be along any second.
