Zombies, Baseball, Pentagon Papers

Here are the things you need to know to start the day June 13.

1. The heat just keeps rolling with a high of about 91 today, the National Weather Service says. It will be sunny, but for a change it will be breezy as well. The overnight low will be about 65 with wind gusts as high as 20 mph. And despite the refreshing blast of rain Sunday, we’re still under a Code Orange air-quality alert today.

2. There’s a zombie warning all day in the Cumberland area. The Walking Dead is filming part of Season 2 there, and the road closures from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. will include Cobb Galleria Parkway from Akers Mill Road to Cumberland Boulevard and Riverwood Parkway from Cobb Galleria Parkway to Cobb Parkway. Check out the excitement the AMC series' filming is causing.

3. Speaking of zombies (just kidding), the Facilities and Technology Committee is meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Central Office on Glover Street in Marietta. If the mere mention of SPLOST excites you, this is the meeting for you. Also on the governmental front, the Cobb Board of Commissioners meets in a work session at 9 a.m. at 100 Cherokee St. to prepare for Tuesday’s regular meeting, and the county Board of Elections and Registration meets at 4 p.m. at 736 Whitlock Ave.

4. Congratulations to the following baseball players who started practice Saturday as members of the East Marietta National Little League’s 10- and 11-year-old all-star team: Brian Baars, Michael Beltrami, Matthew Brubacher, Nicholas Croft, Alex Hoberg, Christopher Joiner, Ali Limbacker, Smit Patel, Nicholas Petrucci, Dylan Scheid and Max Wittekiend. Meanwhile, the 9-year-old all-star team—Jon Matthew Allen, Joshua DeVore, Miles Diamond, Cooper Haseley, Braylen Howard, Ethan Huston, Tucker McCormack, Dhruv Patel, Raymond Shen, Braeden Swilley and Micaiah Williams—is due to continue play in the District 2 tournament at Smyrna’s Brinkley Field tonight at 8. Check the Smyrna Little League’s website for more information and webcasts of all the tournament games.

5. Today is the 40th anniversary of The New York Times’ first publication of parts of the Pentagon Papers, one of the highlights of journalism in the 20th century. Back then, it was all done on newsprint; now, the National Archives is releasing the entire Pentagon Papers in print and online for the first time. Check out all the documents online starting at noon. While you wait, here’s a brief discussion of how the Pentagon Papers and WikiLeaks compare.
