Wheeler Throttles Pope for 2-0 Start

The Wildcats ran -- and passed -- all over their East Cobb rivals Friday to get off to their best start in 15 seasons.

The Wheeler Wildcats are back, and the Pope Greyhounds are really struggling.

After two weeks of the high school football season, the two East Cobb teams are very different positions that they're accustomed.

But as both coaches cautioned after Wheeler's 33-0 home win on Friday, it's too early to make definitive statements about their teams.

Coupled with their opening win over Sprayberry, the Wildcats have started the season 2-0 for the first time since 1997.

Here are more Wheeler-Pope details and reaction from The Marietta Daily Journal

Pope, which is regrouping after losing a big senior class that spearheaded two consecutive state playoff seasons, has fallen to 0-2, including an opening loss to Marietta.

Wheeler quarterback Elijah Staley threw for 207 yards and two touchdowns for the Wildcats, whose defense twice stopped Pope inside their own 5-yard line.

Kahlem Looney also scored on a 62-yard touchdown run for Wheeler, which plays its first road game of the season next week at Langston Hughes (2-0) of Fairburn.

Pope, which is opening the season against Class AAAAAA opponents, plays Etowah (1-1) next Friday.

Walton, ranked No. 3 in Class AAAAAA, was off on Friday.

In other games, Lassiter got 268 yards passing and four touchdowns from quarterback Eddie Printz to overwhelm Sprayberry 49-10. The Trojans are No. 4 in Class AAAAAA.
