Wheeler Receives STEM Certification

The East Cobb high school is only the third in Georgia to be designated for its magnet program.

Wheeler High School recently was certified as a STEM school by the Georgia Department of Education

The East Cobb school is the home to the Center for Advanced Studies in Math, Science and Technology

In a message to Wheeler parents, Principal David Chiprany said the official certification will be presented at an Oct. 16 ceremony at the Doug Lipscomb Gym, with officials from the Georgia DOE on hand.

"This award is a reflection of the contribution of our entire staff, students, and parents toward our STEM Program," Chiprany said.

STEM certification is awarded by the Georgia DOE for schools that demonstrate a comprehensive approach to teaching the curriculum and that promote STEM education in the state.

Wheeler STEM students recently earned national attention when its all-female F1 in Schools team was profiled in Motor Trend Magazine

The four members of that team won a national competition and will compete in the F1 in Schools world championships next month in Abu Dhabi.

The other STEM-certified schools in Georgia are the Marietta Center for Advanced Academics and the Rockdale Magnet School for Science and Technology in Conyers.

FYI, one of the students on the F-1 team is not a Wheeler student; she is an IB student at Campbell High School. Please address that mistake so that the information is accurate in the article.
