Tonight: 'Starfighter,' Baseball, School Board
Here's what you need to know to start July 28 in East Cobb.
1. We pretty much could rerun Wednesday’s forecast, according to the National Weather Service: a high around 92 with a heat index approaching 97; a 20 percent chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms, some possibly severe; and an overnight low around 72.
2. Those are amazingly low rain chances for a Thursday, when the new Vinings Church holds its weekly, free screening of a family film at the Cobb Galleria Gardens, cleverly called Movies at the Galleria. This week’s movie around 8:30 p.m. is 1984’s The Last Starfighter, a huge step up from last week’s Innerspace, largely because of the impeccable Robert Preston in his last theatrical release.
3. Columbus American’s 8-5 win over Masters City on Wednesday in the state Little League tournament in Cartersville clinched East Marietta’s spot in the semifinals. American finished 4-0 in Pool A, including a 10-0 win over East Marietta on Tuesday, and East Marietta finished second at 3-1. The Giants play the No. 1 seed from Pool B, Warner Robins, tonight at 8 in the state semifinals at Clearwater Street Park’s York Field. American plays Madison County in the first semifinal at 5:30.
4. You might have heard about this little business opening Wednesday in East Cobb for something called Whole Foods Market. As crowded as it was, you might have been there. Either way, be sure to check out East Cobb Patch’s photos and video from the grand opening. If you took any of your own, we’d love to see them. Just click on “Add your photos & videos.”
5. The Cobb County Board of Education, fresh off a Tuesday meeting to set the millage rate, will hold the first regularly scheduled, full board meeting of new Superintendent Michael Hinojosa’s time in office. We’ll preview the meeting this morning on East Cobb Patch, but here’s a hint: East Cobb board member Scott Sweeney faces scrutiny over email messages, open meetings and open records.
