Pope, Walton Win; Wheeler Loses
The Greyhounds and Raiders have one more game today in their holiday tournaments, but the Wildcats are done in North Carolina.
Walton’s boys basketball team, coming off a loss Wednesday in the Winged Foot Scholarship Foundation Gulfshore Shootout in Naples, FL, advanced to this afternoon’s fifth-place game with a 78-56 win over Naples High, the Naples Daily News reported.
The Wildcats trailed by 18 at halftime but clawed back within two points in the fourth quarter before losing.
Playing again without seniors Derrick Evans and Justin Seymour, Wheeler had four players in double figures: Elijah Staley with 19, Kejuan Johnson with 14, Austin Smoak with 12 and Chuck Mitchell with 10.
We don’t have any information on Pope’s semifinal win at the Campbell tournament, but the Greyhounds will play for the title tonight at 8:30 against Forest Park, which beat the host Spartans, 61-57, in Thursday’s semifinals.
The Walton Raiders are scheduled to play for fifth place in the Gulfshore Shootout against Buchholz of Gainesville, FL, at 2:15 p.m. today.
The Raiders earned that spot with Thursday’s win over Naples.
