Pope Softball Earns State Ranking

The Lady Greyhounds are starting the season strong, with three wins in their first four games.

The Pope softball team's strong start to the 2012 season has resulted in a state ranking.

The Lady Greyhounds are ranked No. 10 in this week's GHSA Class AAAAA poll, after going 3-1 in last weekend's Longhorn Invitatational at the East Cobb Baseball complex.

It's the first time that a Pope softball team has won a trophy for its first tournament of the season. Pitchers Kelly Barnhill and Lindsay Walsh were dominating in their first outings.

The Lady Greyhounds are coming off a 25-8-1 season in 2011, as they reached the second round of the Class AAAA state tournament. They play at Wheeler on Wednesday and visit Kell Thursday before playing their first home game of the season next Tuesday against North Springs.

The Wheeler softball team is 0-1 after an 11-6 loss to Cambridge on Saturday. The Lady Wildcats, who were 9-13 last season, continue at home on Friday against McEachern and North Atlanta next Monday.

Walton, coming off a 13-13 season, is 1-3 thus far, also competing in the Longhorn Invitational. The Lady Raiders visit Sprayberry Thursday and play at home next Monday against Cambridge.
