The Marietta Museum of History and Patch want to offer you and a friend a special night out. We are giving away a pair of VIP tickets to May 10's Hearts for Heroes III.
Entering this contest is easy. Just post a comment at the bottom of this article and tell us what your favorite thing to do in Marietta is or share your thanks to our servicemen. Just a sentence or two will be fine.
For the third year, Marietta will celebrate, honor and remember local servicemen and wounded warriors with the Hearts for Heroes event at the Strand Theatre.
"We are putting this event together to honor the servicemen and women. Marietta gives a big city feel in a small town; it's like a big family, and this gives us a chance to honor those who help and protect us," Likeam Wise-Jackson, one of the coordinators of the event, said.
In addition, the City of Marietta and Cobb County will be recognized for their continuous contributions, cooperation and support of the armed forces and local military personnel.
"The event raises awareness for our troops and lets them know we support them," Wise-Jackson said.
The public is invited to attend and veterans, community leaders and servicemen are expected to be at the event. JROTC students will also be in attendance.
"It's so much fun to watch them (students) get excited when they meet veterans and the guys coming from the base (Dobbins Air Reserve Base)," Jan Galt Russell, director of Marietta Museum of History, said.
With song and dance performances from country star Corey Crowder, the Kennesaw State University Swing Dancers and Marietta's Big Chicken Chorus, Hearts for Heroes III is slated to be an evening you won't want to miss.
"It's a really cool event and has high school students up to World War II veterans and everything in between. We all come together to honor the military," Russell explained.
The Marietta Museum of History and its Aviation Wing will host the event and all proceeds benefit the museum.
The entertaining evening of memories, music, military and more begins at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 10.
Following the event at the Strand will be a VIP reception hosted by former Georgia Governor Roy Barnes and his wife Marie Barnes at their home.
You must get your entry for the pair of VIP tickets in by 11 p.m. Tuesday, May 8. We’ll conduct a random drawing from these entries.
The winner of the ticket giveaway will be notified by email and can pick up the tickets at the box office the day of the show. The winner will need to have a photo ID to claim the tickets.
Tickets for Hearts for Heroes III can be purchased through the Earl Smith Strand Theatre box office at earlsmithstrand.org or 770-293-0080.
Cost: $30 per person for the Strand event; $125 per person for the Strand event with VIP seating and the VIP reception at the home of Governor and Mrs. Roy Barnes, transportation is included.

When I enlisted in the Air Force in 2005, I had no idea what I was getting into... it was one of the most challenging, yet rewarding experiences of my life. I completed my enlistment in 2009 and was honorably discharged. Many thanks to those who have served and continue to do so! A lot of folks don't realize that our military members give up their personal freedom to that we can enjoy ours. Their families also go through constant upheaval and turmoil so that they can do their job. And it's not like any other job. You can't quit when you want to pursue another job, you go where you're told when you're told, and you're always on call. Because our military members sacrifice their own freedom to go and do as they please, we get to enjoy ours!
You can learn a lot about Marietta's military history down through the years at the Marietta History Museum. It's one of our family's favorite places to take guests when they come in town for a visit. The best thing about Marietta is the Square. Not just the shops and eateries but all the events that are held on the streets and lanes. My most favorite event is the 4th of July parade. We have attended all but one or two years and now participate in it with our Corvette club. The enthuasiam of the people of Marietta and how they turn out in droves for the parade. Then the fireworks just says so much about the patriotic heart they have and instill in their kids. This one event is such an extention of the military presence in Marietta for so many years. What a town!!!

Proud to be the daughter of a WWII Veteran. I enjoy when the Navy Band comes to the Marietta Square. A BIG Thank you, to all the men and women who have and are serving our country.

My favorite thing to do in Marietta is introduce kids and adults to hula hooping. Which I do. Generally for free!

My husband is an active service member and Iraq vet serving at Dobbins. While he was deployed I didn't get out much but plan on changing that now that he's returned. We have always loved spending time together on the square. Visiting local shops, antique shopping, eating and somehow we always discovered something new every time we visit!

Im currently the intern to The Adjutant General of Georgia here at Clay National Guard Center, Marietta. I love everything about my job with the military and hope to become an Air Force Officer when I graduate from college in the next year. My favorite thing to do in Marietta is to hike the Cheatham Hill trail on Saturday mornings and visualize what it must have been like to be a soldier during the Civil War.
