Is a Big Soda Ban a Good Idea?

New York City was set to enact a ban on large sugary drinks this week, but a judge struck it down hours before it was to take effect. Tell us if you’re raising a glass for the judge’s decision, or if you’d agree with a ban on the large drinks.

Going to New York City in the near future? If you plan on visiting the Big Apple, you’ll be able to buy a big soda in any restaurant, sporting event or other location you visit. For now, anyway.

A judge on Monday struck down the city’s planned big soda ban, which would have limited the sale of non-diet soda and some other beverages to cups 16 ounces or smaller. The Associated Press reported that the ruling judge wrote in his opinion that loopholes in the rules defeated the intended purpose of them.

The city’s mayor, Michael Bloomberg, is pushing for an appeal of the judge’s decision, the AP reported Tuesday. Bloomberg defends the ban as an anti-obesity effort.

Do you agree with the judge's ruling, or do you think actions such as these are necessary in the light of the country's growing obesity problem?

Share what’s on your mind with us, and then return here to see what your neighbors in Cobb, Douglas and Paulding counties have said.

With Obamacare, food and healthy/unhealthy lifestyles are now a part of our collective purview.

Way to go to that judge. Why should the government get to tell us what we can eat and drink. Next they will want to ban McDonalds. Yes, obesity is a problem but banning our freedom of choice is not the answer, education is the answer. They have started putting the nutritional information on their menus and soda cans so let the consumer decide. This is America!

More government inherently means less freedom.

The only way I want the government involved in what I eat is for them to make sure it is not contaminated with something or has glass or plastic or some other foreign object in it. Mayor Bloomberg stepped way over the line on this one.

Wrong!Wrong! Wrong! We all act as children in USA so we must be treated as children with the food police chaperone for our health! Mayor Bloomberg is correct in all he has done! read about the dangerousness of SUGAR!

Charles, I think we all know how bad sugar is for us. But it is a legal substance, and therefore we are free to use it.

Pam,
May you never get diabetes as my mother did and died from it at a young age!

Charles, I hope I never get diabetes either. Some people get diabetes regardless of their diet. My mother is borderline, but the doctor says it is controlled by her diet. Which is funny considering what she eats. Every person is responsible for what they do with their lives. I love Krispy Kreme doughnuts, but I also know they are bad for me. I have one every now and then because they have no health value whatsoever. I think that most people know that a big soda drink is not good for them. But it should be their choice, not the government's. Until we outlaw cigaretttes, leave everything else alone.

Government should stay focused on what in really important, cutting government spending, economic recovery / growth and job availability. This subject makes Mayor Bloomberg look ridiculous.

While it's definitely not healthy to drink these all the time, it's each individual's own decision to make. It's not the government's job to make decisions for it's citizen regarding what they eat or drink. It's ridiculous that this is what the Mayor is choosing to focus on. He needs to focus on education - nearly 80% of NYC graduates entering the city's community college system can't read. And he's worried about soft drink size?

It's not only not the government's business and un-Constitutional, but it is damaging to our collective mental health. The more personal decisions like this we cede to the government (by allowing them to take them away), the more we as a society teach future generations to rely on the government to make our decisions. It creates an atmosphere of "if it is legal, it must be OK (or even good)" and if it isn't good, "it must be (or should be) illegal." This is a terrible state of affairs when all behavioral decisions are expected to be codified in law.

Further, this is just a stupid one. When I ever buy such a large soda (always diet, so no sugar involved), it is to share with my wife. It's none of the government's business to tell us we have to buy two sodas and spend more money to get the same amount of drink. That's between me and the store making the offer to sell it.

Finally, as mentioned above, this is the slippery slope of letting government's "nose under the healthcare tent" since it will be used to justify any amount of control over personal behavior in the name of the public financial good, saving healthcare costs. Why not ban any number of activities that cause/risk injuries and fill ER's? What is statistically the largest cause of Sunday morning ER visits? Knife injuries to the palm, from cutting bagels the wrong way. Tsk. Time for government to outlaw bagels!

Kind of weird, isn't it.

If eating too much sugar is a crime and if it is not good for an individual and society, maybe having too much money is a crime. Maybe it shows that an individual is unbalanced and part of the evil rich that takes advantage of the rest of us.

Isn't New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg a billionaire?

Maybe billionaires should be banned for the good of society.

It's not the sugar that's making people over weight. And they know it's not. This was a start to lead to other laws(one by one) to control what people can and can not do. What is causing the over weight problem is the doctors putting everyone on steroids for everything from a stuffed up nose to a stumped toe!!! And the ones they can keep them on daily-they will. When children, teens and young adults are put on this drug- even for one time- it destroys their metabolism rate. Therefore ANYTHING they put in their mouths is stored into fat at a rapid pace. Then they are instantly hunger again and eat again. This can go on for months, just from having one round of this medicine. Now for people that's on it daily for months and years, this never stops. Then this over eating leads to real serious health problems and even depression. If you know a person that is obese, ask them if a doctor has them on steroids or has ever had them on steroids. Ask them how they feel and how they've changed since being put on them. (Seen this with my own eyes.i worked in the medical field for 28yrs) So this ban on soda(sugar) was a starting point to see if they could get it passed, then go to the next ban and next ban and so on until they have complete control of what we can and can not do or eat. Now i know their are people that are obese that's never had steroids, but 8 out of 10 of these have an emotional problem of some kind. So they eat for comfort Kinda like a hoarder,= emotional problem.

Oh and by the way. Thank You Judge for stopping this ban and standing up for our rights. Banning the large soda would not have stopped the US from having obese people anyway. They could just go buy a cold 2 liter at the store and drink the whole thing. Yuk, but they could.

Everybody states "Their Rights" the only right you have is to breathe! Let me tell all you one sided ignorant people SUGAR IS DEADLY! I joined a weight loss and exercise program through VA Hospital which the best doctors and staff around the nation, Sugar, cakes, ice cream, sweets, salt, potato chips everything we generally like is no good for us! I met a CDL trucker veteran for over 30 years delivering unrefined sugar cane to processing plant and picked up refined sugar to be delivered to the distributors, do you all know that possums, snakes, bugs, vermin, and other rodents crawl in those sugar Silo's and literally die of sugar overdose? and then they get processed with the sugar you intake? the sugar plants do not separate these animals from the food you consume! So think about any processed food with preservatives, animal hormones, by-products is no good for you period! So claim your rights again! States like California have already banned fast food restaurants from trans-fats on their menu items and listing the calories of all items! Including your precious SUPER-SIZED DRINKS!

And another thing, My own mother was diabetic and in 1997 didn't listen to doctors about sugar, and wouldn't stay away from the Dunkin Donuts, or cokes or sprite soda which have 8 teaspoons of sugar in each 12 ounce can of coke, and subsequently had a stroke and had a sugar count of 300, which paralyzed her, erased her speech and memory and lived about 5 more years in nursing home in Florida till her death at the young age of 78, if she had listened to doctors and taken her diabetic medication she could of lived a full life! So just keep thinking your rights!

They need to be banning GMO foods as Russia did or passing laws which requires them to label which foods have been genetically altered as this is the real threat not a soda. It seems to me this is more about control and seeing just how far the public will allow the government to intrude of their lives even into their fridges
