East Cobb students rate among the best in the Cobb County School District in the 2012 results of the Criterion Referenced Competency tests released Thursday by the Georgia Department of Education.
Students in grades 3-8 at the elementary and middle school level were tested in April in five academic categories: reading, English/language arts, math, science and social studies.
The tests are a crucial part of determining whether or not a school meets its Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) goals, but the importance of this 12-year-old test will diminish in the coming years as Georgia schools transition to the Common Core Curriculum, which is being implemented by 47 states.
According to figures reported by the Marietta Daily Journal, Cobb third grade students either improved or maintained their pass rates in all testing areas. Fifth grade students improved in four of five disciplines, with a slight drop in math pass rates. Eighth graders improves pass rates in all areas, with a 5.5 percent increase in the science discipline.
“I’m pleased that we’re making progress,” Superintendent Dr. Michael Hinojosa told the MDJ, referring to the county-wide scores. “We have a lot of good people, good instructional programs. … there’s a lot of engagement in the classroom.”
