Can it be that hearts are softening at the Cobb County Animal Control shelter? I hope so. Word came this week that the fee for senior cats, who don’t stand much of a chance for adoption anyway, but especially during kitten season, will be waived for two weeks. These seniors (7 years and older) are spayed/neutered, up to date on their shots, and have tested negative for the various feline viruses.

What an opportunity to adopt a friend and to support the shelter for stepping out of the norm to save lives. These wonderful animals have been abandoned for no reason of their doing; like the economy, and possibly because of it, they have fallen on hard times.

Vet Tip of the Week 

Feline heartworm disease, transmitted through the bite of a mosquito, is treatable in dogs but is fatal in cats. Keeping kitty indoors will not protect it. The only sure protection is with a 30-day heartworm preventative obtained through your veterinarian.  

Symptoms include:

• chronic respiratory disease (similar to asthma)
• heart disease
• sudden death
