Bar Sign Down, Protest Quiet
A sign which read “I Heard The White House Smelled Like Collard Greens And Fried Chicken,” was just the latest controversial statement at Mulligan's Bar in Marietta.
Even though an anti-Obama message has been taken down from a Marietta bar sign, people still showed up this weekend to protest.
It was a peaceful event Saturday at Mulligan’s Food and Spirits with about 20 protesters—organized by Marietta-based New Order National Human Rights Organization Inc.—showing up, according to the Marietta Daily Journal.
A sign, which read “I Heard The White House Smelled Like Collard Greens And Fried Chicken,” was just the latest controversial statement at the the bar on Park Street Southeast in Marietta.
In 2008, the bar received national attention when it sold T-shirts reading “Obama ’08” depicting the cartoon chimp Curious George peeling a banana.
Past phrases have mocked the death of former Sen. Ted Kennedy and taken jabs at figures like former U.S. Rep. Cynthia McKinney: “Cynthia – Call Your Proctologist. He’s Found Your Head,” according to the MDJ.
A number of bikers showed up to meet the protesters on Saturday in support of the bar's free speech, according to the MDJ.
But one protester said he was happy the controversy had drawn attention to the sign.
Efforts to get comment from Mulligan’s owners were not successful, the MDJ reported, but on Saturday, the sign outside Mulligan’s read, “Many Americans Lost Their Lives Fighting For Your Freedom Of Speech.”

We have certainly been hearing a lot from the Romney campaign about how polls don't mean anything (a typical response from any candidate down in the polls), but Nate Silver has collected and done a great analysis on how late Sept. polls have been a pretty accurate predictor of the actual winner in November:
http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/09/24/the-statistical-state-of-the-presidential-race/?gwh=5EF8A26AB0E3EE9AB54C2C6ABE8CBF36
Right now, conservatives are just desperately and wildly slinging feces with both hands and hoping that will do some damage. They see how statistically improbable it has become for a Romney win. That is what this bar was doing, trying to connect with other local racists. But they never thought about the obvious; which is that a racist isn't likely to have ever voted for Obama and that things like these signs, t-shirts, etc. are simply ticking off potential customers, convincing them that this is not the type of business that they want to support.

I read a different article that said the original owner, Mike Mulligan passed away last yr. HE would not have removed the sign. Apparently, the new owner or relative was trying to keep his spirit alive. I live down the street from this place and was amazed by different inappropriate and racist signage. There was a temporary one that became permanent...US BORDER PATROL EATS FREE.
