How Do You Dissolve a Marriage Without Destroying the Family?

Divorce Innovations Offers Unique Approach, Focusing on the Couple, Rather than the Individual; Seminar to be Held Sat., June 23

Divorce Innovations, a company providing alternative solutions to traditional divorce, will hold a seminar about the legal aspects of divorce on Sat., June 23. The seminar will be held from 10 a.m.-noon at Divorce Innovations, 1201 Peachtree St., NE, Ste. 525, Atlanta.

Divorce Innovations, comprised of counseling, financial and legal professionals, is aimed at helping divorcing couples navigate their way through the divorcing process. They focus on one objective: providing the best outcome for divorcing couples, their children and their families. Divorce Innovations offers Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) methods that are “less adversarial and more respectful than what litigation has traditionally provided,” said Bob Bordett, CFP (certified divorce planner), CDFA (certified divorce financial analyst) and one of three Divorce Innovations’ principals.

“As coaching and financial professionals we have worked with divorcing clients for many years and have witnessed the positive and constructive results that unfold when couples work together in good faith,” Bordett said. “Our clients, in turn, have experienced the difference when communication flows and an empowering sense of control returns to the process.”

Since every divorce is unique, Divorce Innovations offers a number of settlement models, each providing an established format and service to address financial, parenting and children’s issues. These models reflect a range of opportunities that provide the couple hands-on involvement and control of the process.

“When people come in as a couple, their emotions drop because they’re receiving the same information and not being pitted against each other,” Bordett said. “They see that we serve as a financial neutral and don’t work for either party. We work for the process…We don’t have a dog in the fight.”

In divorce, the two biggest issues are the finances and the children. With Divorce Innovations, these two aspects are addressed first. The financial professionals work out the financial aspects of divorce, including alimony and child support, while the coaches, licensed clinical social workers and licensed clinical psychologists, address children’s issues and other challenges that may create roadblocks to reaching an agreement.

“We don’t use the term ‘custody,’” said Marsha Schechtman, LCSW. “We use ‘parenting time’ since we’re looking to encourage agreement. When people get divorced, often the children become pawns. We’re looking to avoid that.”

East Cobb resident Paul Fair, Ph.D., said, “Divorce Innovations’ coaching helps couples calm their strong negative feelings that interfere with making good financial and co-parenting decisions affecting each other and their children during the divorce process and for years to come.”

Bordett, Schechtman and Dr. Fair, all principals of Divorce Innovations, have worked with divorcing couples for more than 20 years. They have been involved with collaborative divorce – an alternative to courtroom litigation with cooperating attorneys and neutral experts – for years and even provide training to other professionals across the country. But they saw a need for another approach in which couples could have more control in the divorcing process and also potentially reduce costs. They coined the term “integrated” divorce, which allows divorcing couples to use a combination of coaching and financial professionals on an as-needed basis.

Bordett gave the example of one couple who was married for 38 years and was able to pursue an integrated approach to divorce that had positive results for both. Another couple “test drove” the resolution that the team came up with, tweaked as they went along and finally came up with an amicable agreement for both parties.

Divorce Innovations also specializes in providing services for couples with special needs children, as well as same-sex partners.

Divorce Innovations plans to hold a series of ongoing seminars to educate divorcing couples about the legal aspects of divorce as well as introduce them to divorce options.

The seminars cost $39.95 per couple, or $29.95 for an individual. More information about the seminars can be found at www.divorceinnovations.com.
